A member of the Malta Labour Party, Carmelo Abela was appointed as Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade Promotion in June 2017.
From December 2014 he served as Minister for Home Affairs and National Security, having worked with the Prime Minister as Government Spokesman and Whip since April 2014.
Prior to this, he worked in the financial sector having joined Mid-Med Bank Ltd (now HSBC Bank Malta plc), where he was a Manager until April 2014.
